Translation is a highly competitive field. There are lots of contenders and to be able to stand out, a translator needs to be different than others. On this post, I will try to elaborate on why is it significant to work with a specialized translator, as a company who requires translation.
Translators are linguists, who have the necessary education to work in a language pair, sometimes more than one language pairs. However, getting an education in translation does not necessarily mean that it is enough to be efficient in areas like engineering, machinery, software development, literature and so on. They require more specific skills, terminology and interest. A translator, who has no interest in literature, will find it impossible to translate a novel. In the same manner, it is also not possible to translate a quantum physics related document without having the necessary set of skills.
To be clearer, I would like to point out some features that differentiate a specialized translator from a general translator. I believe we would all agree when I say that it is indeed almost impossible to be expert in every field. It is the pure reason that specializations exist. It makes life easier for all of us. An engineer, who has special interest in automobile and likes to work with them, should specialize in that field in order to get the best outcome. It is the same with translation. Personal interests and self-teaching plays a great role while some translators choose to get another degree just to specialize.
In my case, I’ve spent 2 years studying physics and another 2 years studying engineering physics in Germany. I have started my translation days back in those years while studying. It was a nice way to get experience and money I needed to keep studying. However, when I realized that being an engineer was not the thing that I wanted, I changed my field to “American Studies”. I have a personal interest in web development, engineering, natural sciences as well as literature.
Knowing that a specialized translator has a personal interest in your companies field of industry, will build a wall of trust and joy of working together. You will know that when you have a translation work, a specialized translator will be happy to do it for you and he/she will be looking to learn from that translation job because we all love to learn in the areas that we have a special interest. And could there be a better way to learn than to translate into your native language and earn money at the same time?
